Preventive Services

U. S. health care costs are projected to increase 25 percent by 2030 as the population ages and the number of individuals 65 years and older grows substantially. Preventive care can help reduce the rising cost of health care.

Medicare covers a variety of preventive services to help Medicare recipients stay healthy. These services are designed to:

  • Help prevent diseases.
  • Detect diseases early when most treatable.
  • Manage medical problems.

Many older adults, however, have not had all the recommended screenings covered by Medicare. The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME) is facilitating a Medicare-sponsored EHR Preventive Care Program, which focuses on improving the quality and frequency of preventive health care services to optimize the quality of life for Medicare recipients.

Through the EHR Preventive Care Program, CCME works with small- to medium-sized, primary care physician practices serving a Medicare population to support the use of electronic health records (EHRs). CCME also works with these practices to implement care management processes to improve the rate of patients who receive:

CCME is committed to promoting the use of EHRs to improve the quality of care patients receive. EHRs are becoming increasingly prevalent in both public and private health care sectors in the Carolinas and across the nation. EHRs have been recognized as beneficial by the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Physicians. EHRs are vital to improvement in quality of care, patient safety, decision support, access to patient clinical information, practice efficiency, and patient-clinician communication.
